Air fryers have become increasingly popular over the last few years, but how safe are they? Is your air fryer secretly harming your electrics?
Air Fryers: How Safe Are They?
Air fryers - a lot of households have them. We’re getting more calls in Stirling and Clackmannanshire to come and fix electrical accessories, due to the heat from the air fryer melting them.
Here’s some safety tips when choosing and using an air fryer:
Choose a reputable brand preferrably from well known trusted high street retailer or online shop.
Avoid fryers from third party sellers and the likes of market place.
Most manufacturers ask you to register their equipment, this normally extends the warranty but also lets the manufacturer easily contact you if there is a recall.
Always follow manufacturers instructions
Check that your appliance has a UK plug, but if it doesn’t, do not use a UK travel adaptor - get in touch with the retailer and ask for their advice.
Do regular checks of the plug and socket for burn marks, sounds of arcing or if it feels too hot to touch. If you have fuses blowing or circuit-breakers tripping then contact a registered electrician to investigate.
If you notice a burning smell (other than food) or any unusual noises, switch the fryer off immediately and contact the retailer or manufacturer.
Never fill your air fryer with oil.
Never immerse the fryer in water, and alway wait until it cools before cleaning. At least 30 mins after use.
Keep the power cords away from hot surfaces.
Keep the air fryer out from the wall when in use and that there is recommended air flow around it. Ideally when in use, place a heat resistant mat underneath and keep it away from underneath wall units.
